Postcard from Franconia No. 582

Mushrooms on a meadow

Graue Falten-Tintling or Coprinopsis atramentaria

Mushrooms are a fascinating part of nature, and they come in all shapes and sizes. One such mushroom, the Coprinopsis atramentaria, which is common in meadows and pastures throughout Europe, is also known as the Grey Felt Cap mushroom. It is a beautiful, unique species that has many distinctive characteristics that make it stand out from other mushrooms.

The Coprinopsis atramentaria has a fleshy grey cap with a smooth surface that can range from light grey to almost black. The cap is typically between 3-7 cm in diameter, and is often described as being velvety due to its felt-like texture. On the underside, the cap is covered in small, brownish-grey gills that spread all the way to the centre; these gills are where the spores are released.

The Coprinopsis atramentaria can be found in meadows and pastures throughout Europe, usually near decaying vegetation and dead grasses. It prefers shady, moist areas and grows best in the presence of nitrogen-rich soil or decaying plant matter. This mushroom typically fruits during the months of June to September, but can be found all year round.

The Coprinopsis atramentaria has many culinary uses, both in its fresh form and as a dried product. Its flesh is quite dense and meaty, and its flavour has been described as mild and nutty. This mushroom can be used as a delicious addition to a variety of dishes, including pastas, soups, stews and casseroles. Dried Coprinopsis atramentaria can also be used in recipes for an earthy, smoky flavour.

The Coprinopsis atramentaria has many interesting features that make it a great addition to any meadow. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also a beautiful mushroom that can make a unique addition to your landscape. So, the next time you are out for a walk in a meadow, be sure to keep an eye out for the distinctively grey, velvety-textured Coprinopsis atramentaria. Who knows, you might just be able to find the perfect meal or snack!
