One photo a day. Sometimes two.

Even on the days nothing happens.

When I'm out on a trip, I never know beforehand what I'm going to photograph. In almost every case, anyway. I let it happen, and usually it's an emotional decision: the light over a canal in Bruges, for instance. Or the shimmer on a bumblebee's back. Whatever triggers that impulse in me – "damn, our world is beautiful" – that's what I want to pass on. Because I think it might give you something. One or two pictures go up every day, after 24 hours there are new ones, and it's been running like that for over a decade. Let yourself drift – and come back soon.

Projects

Most postcards belong to something longer than a single day — a place I keep returning to, which is why most projects are literally titled “Shot in…”: the Alps, Franconia, Benelux, wherever these particular photographs were taken. Small Beings is the one project built around a subject rather than a place.

I’ve lost count of my trips to the Netherlands – it’s easily the country I’ve visited most. Somewhere between the flat horizons, the glass facades of Amsterdam and the kindness of my Dutch friends, I started bringing a camera. This collection gathers those impressions: postcards from Holland and Belgium, shot along the way.

A stone bridge crosses a canal in Brugge at night, its lit arch and streetlamp-lined buildings reflected in the still water, with a bell tower visible in the background. A row of white beach cabins with alternating blue and yellow doors lines a sandy dune slope at Cadzand, grass-covered dunes rising behind under a cloudy sky. A kitesurfer rides the waves at Cadzand, silhouetted against port cranes and a wind turbine on the horizon, with a large kite overhead in the orange evening sky. A brick castle with a pointed turret stands among trees on the Minnewater lake in Bruges, its reflection mirrored in the still water below. Stepped-gable canal houses in Bruges line a stone quay wall, reflected in the still water below as the low sun flares between two trees.

A neon light outline of the Grote of St. Bavokerk's silhouette glows orange above a Haarlem street, with the church's actual stone tower rising behind it at dusk. At night, the glass-walled De Zeerover restaurant glows under a green metal roof, with diners visible inside and the Rotonde building lit up behind it in Zandvoort. A black door with ivy climbing the brick facade beside it opens onto Smedestraat in Haarlem at night, the illuminated tower of the Grote Kerk rising in the distance down the cobbled street. The brick tower of Zandvoort lighthouse, its windows lit, stands against a massive cloud bank tinged pink by evening light, with a bird flying above. Our project “Small Beings ” wants to spark people’s interest in protecting life. With images, context and captivating stories, we bring the importance of biodiversity closer to our readers. Macro images convey the hidden beauty of the tiny world of arthropods in a way that touches you.

It all started when the pandemic abruptly shrank my personal, creative “photo radius”. Suddenly my own region was in front of the lens more often, and I wandered through my beautiful Franconian homeland with an even more alert eye. Hamburg, Berlin and South Tyrol were replaced by Erlangen, Bubenreuth and Franconian Switzerland.

Shot in Berlin

My father was born in Berlin. My grandmother lived in Berlin. My wife and I spent our first days together in Berlin. We married in Berlin. My mother-in-law used to live in Berlin. You can see why I love this city. It’s a place Europe keeps projecting its longing onto, and whenever things go wrong on our continent, all eyes turn here.

Shot in the Alps

Mountains are magical places for me, they flip the awe switch. And the message is always similar: I am tiny and insignificant in a world of grandiose scenery. Whether Timmelsjoch, Zugspitze, the pale mountains of the Dolomites or “the roof of Europe” (Mont Blanc) – each of these regions makes me feel my connection to our world in its own way.

“Voyager, c’est naître et mourir à chaque instant. ” (Victor Hugo) Here, you’ll find some impressions from beautiful France. This neighbor across the Rhine is both a cultural icon and always worth a visit. From the timeless elegance of Paris, to the dramatic coastline of Normandy, France never fails to surprise.

Shot in Hamburg

Impressions of Hamburg, Germany’s second largest city – also known as the “Tor zur Welt”, the gateway to the world. With its harbor and piers, the city has always had an international flair, and that has shaped its cultural and musical scene. My favorite band from there, Kettcar, wrote the song “Landungsbrücken raus ”.

Shot on Amrum

Just like in the Alps, Amrum offers a very special light. The scenery is characterized by one of the widest sandy beaches in Europe. And it feels like you can see much more sky here than anywhere else. Thanks to clever tourism, the island managed to avoid high-rise buildings, so you can actually still feel something like solitude on some beaches – at least at the right time of day or night.

Here, you’ll find some impressions from the beautiful Czech Republic. This next-door neighbor is both foreign and familiar to most of us Germans. We are so close to each other both geographically and culturally, and yet many impressions came as a surprise to me – especially the realization of how rarely I make it there.

Shot in the Tuscany

Tuscany is closely tied to my own life. It’s where I actively and intensively worked on a new direction for my career. Questions that went deep and occupied me for a very long time. Accordingly, I needed peace, time to think, inspiration and something nurturing for the soul. All of this can be found in Tuscany, and much more.
